OVERVIEW/BASIC FUNCTION:
Responsible for all aspects of the Engineering department to include the proper operation, maintenance and repair of all heating, ventilation, refrigeration and mechanical equipment. Develop, coordinate and monitor a rooms maintenance program to ensure the safety and comfort of all associates and guests.
Supervise, train and manage all Engineering associates. Manages the efficient and safe operation of all
plant, equipment, ancillary maintenance and repairs towards protection of the property asset including
structural aspects of the building.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides advice to senior management on all aspects of engineering support, environmental best practices and controls and the operational efficiency of the property.
- Ensures the effective financial management of the engineering department by setting maintenance budgets, capital works programs and engineering plans and ensuring that performance against these are regularly monitored and reviewed. Responsible for the general cost control aspects of maintenance, the preparation of departmental cost budgets and their implementation and submission to management.
- Assists with capital project planning, in liaison with senior management, to ensure capital funding is effectively allocated and budgeted in accordance with company directives and philosophy.
- Plans, implements and administers an energy management program by establishing energy management ‘best practices’ to achieve reductions in consumption, without negative impact to customers or associates, and maintains records and sets future performance targets against with the objective to reduce usage and enhance profitability.
- Ensures the associate awareness of energy management within the property by conducting regular education and training programs on energy conservation and matters related to efficient operation of equipment in a cost-effective fashion.
- Contributes to guest satisfaction standards by ensuring that technical support services quickly address, and where possible, anticipate, individual needs. Ensure the safety and comfort of guests and that any requests for service are handled in a courteous and efficient fashion.
- Ensures adherence to all statutory regulations and fire codes by regularly reviewing policies and safety procedures. Ensures that any tests and inspections required on plant by statutory authorities are carried out as and when required and that all records and documentation associated with such tests and surveys are correctly kept and/or displayed. Ensure that the hotel fulfils all compliance requirements.
- Ensures a technically competent engineering staff by selecting, training and developing a motivated, well?qualified maintenance team. Carries out regular work sampling studies within the department to evaluate the performance and productivity of personnel.
- Maintains the condition of the physical assets of the hotel by carrying out any upgrading and project work in liaison with designated internal department and / or external consultants as maybe agreed.
- Develops, manages and maintains preventive maintenance Programms for:
- All mechanical and electrical systems
- All guest rooms
- All kitchens and restaurants
- All public areas
- Maintain inventory of all parts and supplies.
- Purchase all parts, supplies, tools and equipment related to Engineering, through direct contact with sales
representatives.
- Ensure the proper operation, maintenance and repair of all:
a. Heaters, pumps, valves and lines used in the distribution of steam and heated or processed
water.
b. Refrigerant compressors, condensers, evaporators, traps, transfer pumps, expansion valves,
stop valves as well as all refrigerant lines and devices used to control temperatures.
c. Air compressors along distribution lines and all valves and devices for air control.
d. Natural and manufactured gas and distribution lines, including all valves and control devices.
e. Water filters, softeners, piping and pumps used in conjunction with water distribution,
including all sinks and toilet bowls, as well as supply lines and water lines.
f. All types of motors or engines used to power pumps, compressors and fans.
g. All types of locks, keys and locksmith related duties.
h. All electrical work and repairs.
- Coordinate the maintenance repair and installation of carpentry work, and those duties related to carpentry.
- Ensures the cost effectiveness and technical efficiency of all services performed by outside contracts by close supervision. Ensures work is carried out in accordance with contracts, leases, services agreements and warranties.
- Ensures the quality of all work completed by both associates and external contracted staff adheres to the standards of good engineering practice, and that all safety rules are consistently applied.
- Contributes to the effectiveness of management decision making by representing the engineering department at all management and associate meetings and by ensuring regular liaison with heads of other departments.
- Ensures individual readiness for performance review and takes responsibility for all follow up and corrective action as maybe needed to ensure compliance with company guidance.
- Develops and updates policies and manuals, as related to the Division / Department, for implementation in the field, while ensuring compliance to the same for consistency across the group.
- Actively participates in and leads recruitment and talent development for the Division / Department, to meet both current and future needs.
- Authorize requests for vacation/sick leave, holidays for associates members, leaves of absences, schedule changes, overtime, salary increases/reductions, purchase requests and expenditures.
- Develop and implement a preventive maintenance program of all-building equipment and guestrooms, including the training of the Engineering associates on the management of such a program.
- Is a “Brand Ambassador” at all times and ensures brand integrity and clarity are always maintained.
- Models the Company’s culture, vision, mission and core values at all times.

- Develop, recommend and direct the operation, policies, procedures, plans and programs of the Engineering Department.
- Conduct ongoing training with existing associates.
- Administer legally required employment practices such as performance and aptitude reviews.
- Prepare and adjust weekly work schedules in accordance with staffing guidelines and labor forecasts.
- Adjust work goals and schedules throughout the week to meet the business demands.
- Coordinate breaks for associates.
- Inspect grooming and attire of associates; rectify any deficiencies.
- Assign duties and work responsibilities to associates members.
- Authorize requests for vacation/sick leave, holidays for associates, leave of absences, schedule changes, overtime, salary increases/reductions, purchase requests and expenditures.
- Monitor associates performance in all phases of job functions ensuring that all procedures are carried out to departmental standards; rectify any deficiencies with respective personnel.
- Analyze accounting records and data for operating costs and data.
- Approve bills and invoices, statements, checks, budget data, associate transfers/promotions, training manuals/programs, work orders.
- Compare and resolve discrepancies between actual and budget figures, contracts, data and products with product standards.
- Enforce safety regulations.
- Investigate accidents.
- Assist Engineering associates.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
- Held accountable and committed whatever it takes to ensure the full support and active cooperation of all RAD’s associates under his command responsibilities to comply with the Hotel’s OSHMS Policies, OSHMS Procedure and any other relevant legislation applies within the Hotel.
- Held accountable for the safety and health of his people under his command responsibilities, including Hotel Guest, visitors & members of the public. Wherein the safe system of work, safe appliances and equipment, safe place of work & competent and safety conscious personnel are in place.
- Accountable to comply and apply immediate control measures taken for all identified hazards within their workplace (e.g. incident reports, near misses, damage to property, etc.)
- Accountable to provide suitable resources for the purpose of safe working process
- Accountable to provide information, instruction, on the job training & full supervision to all his personnel under his command responsibilities.
- To report to his Managing Director.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience: At least ten years’ experience in the hotel engineering operation in which min five
years as Assistant Director of Engineering or similar position.
- Education: High school diploma.
- General Skills: Must be able to perform job functions with attention to detail, speed and accuracy; prioritize, organize and follow-up; be a clear thinker, remaining calm and resolving problems using good judgment; follow directions thoroughly; understand a guest’s service needs; work cohesively with associates as part of a team; work with minimal supervision; maintain confidentiality of guest information and pertinent hotel data.
- Technical Skills: Working knowledge of plumbing codes, electrical codes, national/local fire codes, local mechanical codes, water treatment programs, blue prints and plumbing and wiring schematics, power and hand tools, meters, etc. as it relates to the technical trades, knowledge of all mechanical equipment critical to the operation of the building; ability to prepare budgets and ensure cost controls, enforce hotel's standards, policies and procedures with Engineering associates, prioritize and organize work assignments; delegate work to Supervisors and associates, direct performance of associates and follow up with corrections where needed, instruct/direct associates in the operation, maintenance and repair of equipment, ascertain associates training needs and provide such training; troubleshoot and use alternatives in emergency situations, ensure security and confidentiality of all hotel information, interact positively with hotel personnel and provide prompt solutions to problems.
- Language: Required to speak, read and write English, with fluency in other languages preferred.
- Physical Requirements: Endure various physical movements throughout the work areas, reach up and down, remain stationary at times throughout work periods, and satisfactorily communicate with guests and associates to their understanding.
